Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, one of top highlights in Ho Chi Minh City.
1. General Introduction to Notre-Dame Cathedral of Saigon
The Notre-Dame Cathedral is strategically positioned in Paris Square within the bustling Ben Nghe Ward of District 1. The construction began in 1877 and completed just three years later, in 1880. The designer and also supervisor of the project was J. Bourad, whose design reflects the grandeur of French Gothic and Romanesque styles. On April 11, 1880, the consecration and inauguration ceremony of the cathedral took place under the direction of Bishop Colombert, with the presence of the Governor of Cochinchina, Le Myre de Vilers.
The French colonial government funded the cathedral’s construction and decoration, spending an impressive 2,500,000 French francs. Initially named the State Cathedral, the structure served as a religious center for the French colonial administration before being renamed the Notre-Dame Cathedral. In 1962, it was officially designated as a basilica.
2. Highlights of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral
The cathedral is 91 meters long and 35.5 meters wide, with a main vault height of 21 meters and two bell towers reaching nearly 57 meters. With an open and spacious design, the basilica has become a symbol of Saigon and a must-visit attraction for both domestic and international travelers. It is particularly popular among those visiting Vietnam for family trips and cultural experiences. The cathedral boasts several remarkable features, including:
The Nave
Inside Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, engineers designed its nave to withstand pressure 10 times greater than the structure’s total weight. The interior includes a main nave, two side aisles, and two rows of prayer houses. The total length of the basilica is 93 meters, with a maximum width of 35 meters and a vault height of 21 meters. With this large capacity, the cathedral can accommodate up to 1,200 people.

The Bell Towers
Visitors are often impressed by the bell towers, which are considered the soul of the cathedral. Initially, the structure had two towers of 36.6 meters without roofs. Then, in 1895, two spires were added, each measuring 21 meters in height.
As a result, the total height of the bell towers reaches 57 meters. Later on, six additional bells, representing the six musical notes (Do, Re, Mi, Sol, La, Si), were installed in the towers. Each bell is adorned with intricate patterns, adding to the visual splendor of Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral.

The Altar Area
One of the most impressive features inside the basilica is the altar area, where all the altars are finely sculpted from single blocks of marble. The 56 colorful stained-glass windows create a breathtaking visual effect. Every detail, from the arches to the ornamental carvings, follows the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, giving the space an aura of solemnity and elegance.

The Park Outside
The cathedral’s exterior park is a favorite spot among locals and tourists, particularly for photography and selfies. At the center of the front courtyard, you will find the Statue of Our Lady of Peace, sculpted by G. Ciocchetti in 1959. This 4.6-meter-tall, 8-ton statue is made of white Italian marble, standing as a symbol of peace and faith.
